Key Aspects of the 9th Grade Nation:
Seamless Transition. Smooth transition from middle grades into high school as well as a dynamic transition during which new 9th graders become deeply engrossed with their learning and wholeheartedly immersed in what they themselves can achieve and contribute.
Personalization. Making connections and relevance to students’ lives and engaging all students’ through heart, hand, and mind. Linking prior understandings, creating frameworks for factual knowledge and encouraging students to self-monitor their learning towards their learning goals. Strong and Respectful Relationships. The 9th grade year serves as indoctrination into a culture of high expectations with caring adults and peers. Students understand and value how they themselves as individuals are interconnected with and valued by everyone in the Pittsburgh Public Schools and the Pittsburgh Community as a whole. Civics: Be the Change! Rigorous, project-based, activity-oriented course designed with the City of Pittsburgh as the lens through which all members of the 9th Grade Nation begin a journey of civic awareness, empowerment, and engagement. Student Support. Student centered instruction with horizontal and vertical curriculum alignment. Benchmark assessments and monitoring of manifesting behaviors for each 9th grader who appears to be falling behind in any aspect of the school experience. Interventions will be provided early and often for both acceleration and remediation opportunities. Developing “Habits of Mind”. Professional Learning Communities.
