9th Grade Nation is a new major initiative of Excel.9-12, The Plan for High School Excellence. The 9th Grade Nation symbolizes how all ninth grade students are entering an exciting and important phase of life--High School.
Brought forward by a member of the High School Reform Task Force as a suggested implementation strategy informed by research-based best practices from high performing high schools across the country, along with the knowledge and expertise of PPS administrators, teachers, counselors, staff and other stakeholders, the 9th Grade Nation is a set of strategies targeted specifically to ensure not just a seamless transition for students into high school as they leave 8th grade, but also as a dynamic transition during which new 9th graders become deeply engrossed with their learning and wholeheartedly immersed in what they themselves can achieve and contribute.
High Schools that make an extraordinary commitment to 9th grade success find that it is the foundation to the rigor, relevance and relationships that need to occur for the academic success of all high school students as they reinvent American high schools.
The 9th Grade Nation was developed with deliberate intent to focus on the altruistic, compassionate side of adolescents at this age and to marry that to learning and team building opportunities for students. When students are engaged through heart, hand, and mind, they are more than likely to stay engaged and to persist through difficulty as they explore new tasks and acquire new knowledge.
To this end, the 9th Grade Nation seeks to provide a feeling of shared governance among students and a sense of shared identity that will carry forward and help students to be supportive of one another. The goal is to succeed academically, moving on to 10th grade and, ultimately, to graduate with a plan for the future.
